Besides Larry Vogel, anyone who sees themselves as multidimensional in a creative manner is a Renaissance Man. Yet Larry really epitomizes this character type, with talents in painting, sculpture and photography. I know him best for the latter, which you can see in full view at Irvine Fine Arts Center during the current Photo Exchange exhibition, which includes other talented local photographers. For more about what it means to be a Renaissance Man (or Woman!), check out Larry’s blog. And don’t miss his lecture on March 11 if you’d like to delve further into the photography on display in Irvine.
… and often glorious, if you’ve seen some of the classic images assembled at RailroadHeritage.org. They’ve posted one of my own images there, a view that splits the Union Pacific line on the left and LA County’s Metro line on the right… with a lone figure isolated in the distance between them. When I first saw this it seemed like a powerful comment on the sense of isolation we can feel inside the vast product of our industrialization (which has completely subjugated the Los Angeles River). Kudos to Scott Lothes and the others at Railroad Heritage, who do a fantastic job of keeping “track” of this important part of our national heritage.
Formu-la in Honolulu has launched an awesome new magazine, as well as a pretty hip daily catalog of life on the Islands. Check it out — and look left on the landing page. Thank you Formu-la!
Don’t miss the opening of Barbara Ruffini’s new show at Winnow Gallery & Goods on Saturday, Feb. 6. This promises to be an enjoyable late afternoon of browsing “uncommon” household products while viewing Barbara’s beautiful painting and photography (also uncommon!). Check her out early at barbararuffini.com
